AOL-Yahoo to Merge in 2007?

December 27th, 2006

No, they haven’t merged….. yet. But, an AOL-Yahoo merge is rumored, looks rather attractive, and one source says that 2007 is the year for this. Another source agrees, but offers an additional possibility of AOL and Yahoo to be acquired by another company such as Microsoft. With Time Warner considering the option of selling AOL, who knows what will happen with the future of AOL.

This information comes from a Merrill Lynch analyst report in which they speculate that both AOL and Yahoo are geared up for “a transformative transaction in the coming 12 to 24 months.” It’s imminent that a change for both is near, as these rumors have been around for months. Fortune magazine mentioned this rumor back in October describing a Yahoo merge with AOL as a way to impress Wall Street, and yank some of the spotlight away from one of their biggest rivals, Google. This came after Google bought YouTube and spent some time shining in the spotlight after they forked out $1.65 billion for the online video giant.

Ars Technica suggests that both companies are facing investors that are doubtful, and with overlapping technology, a merger would mean more profit. So while all of this is a possibility, and makes sense, none of it is certain. Of course, besides Yahoo, there are other well known names that fit into the equation well for a possible merger with AOL, such as News Corp., or even Google. Although, those names always seem to come up with any rumored merger or acquisition.

So for now, my merger watchlist for 2007 includes AOL… with other additions T.B.A.

This move will move me away from Yahoo towards Google completely. I can’t for some reason stand AOL. :)

Well, then what about Google AIM interoperability ?

  3. Avatar

Well, Google AIM interoperability would be a very minor part of the normal online activity (a general perspective). People who are not into IM can still be good (in this case).

However, a “AOL - Yahoo” merger that was being discussed was certainly scary and does seem to mean a lot more than IM.

Too many bad experiences with AOL… :)

That’s amazing. Nowadays everyone just wants to buy everyone else. This is strange because I thought AOL was trying to better its site and turn away from the ISP market. I didn’t even think of the IM options, but if Y! msgr and AIM worked together then Y! would have the big three, Y! AIM and WinLive. Now lets keep our eyes open for that Y! messenger/Y! mail beta combo that’s been rumored!

I think everyone’s AOL phobia comes from the countless CD’s stashed in stores for their overpriced dial-up internet service. I’d never get AOL as an ISP, but I may have to someday check out that free antivirus they’ve released with pretty impressive detection rates.

Hi, finally decided to subscribe to the site, mainly because i though cybermarks would be helpful. They are, but they’re too well hidden; it seems you must go to this site then hit manage then hit cybermarks (the alternative is to cybermark whatever page your currently on then click it again).

How about an optional sidebar module that lists cybernotes? It could have buttons to show more or less, or even have a search ;)

Glad you decided to register. I’m not sure if I completely understand what you are wanting with the CyberMarks? If you CyberMark an article it will turn from red to green, and then if you click on that green link it will take you to the CyberMarks management page. Because of caching reasons an article might not show up as CyberMarked until after about 15 minutes.

I like the CyberNotes sidebar idea…I’ll look into a nice way to present those.

Yahoo has already gotten me to stop using (TV Listings, Maps) or reduce the use (Mail, Movies) of their many products with their redesigns. If they partner with AOL, that would be the end of my dealings with Yahoo.

I could just see going to AOL-Yahoo and discovering it places cookies on my machine that if I try to remove will cause Windows to stop working correctly or they are so hidden and sprawled out everywhere that even the best anti-spyware program can’t remove them all.

The thing is, what if I’m looking at a cybernet post that I don’t consider worthy of a cybermark, and want to look at my cybermarks. I must either cybermark it anyway or click the [manage] link in the top right and then click [cybermarks]. I think a sidebar would be a great solution to this, and while that’s in the making, a simple link straight to cybermarks would help ;)

    Keep up the info ;)

Ahh, I see what you’re saying. Sounds easy enough to do. I should have a bunch of new things ready to present on Monday, and I’m sure this will be one of them.
