Opera Browser For Wii Expected Friday

December 19th, 2006
5 Comments Written by Ashley

Back in September, we wrote about Opera’s plans for a browser specifically for devices like the Sony Mylo, Mood Box, and yes, even Nitendo’s Wii.  The mobile market is something that not many other companies have appeared to be interested in. Today in their latest press release, Opera has announced that a trial version will be available on Friday, December 22.

While this is just a trial version, the final version of Opera is expected around the end of March, 2007.  That too will be free to download until the end of June.  From there, if you’re wanting the browser, you’ll need to visit the Wii Shop Channel and purchase it for 500 Wii Points.

Scott Hedrick, Vice President of Devices at Opera says that “Our software brings the power and reach of the Internet to the hottest video game system available.” Their browser for devices is perfect for the varying screen sizes, and supports popular web technologies like AJAX. One thing I like about Opera is that their press releases are short, sweet, and to the point. They’re pretty laid back, and they even take the time for some fun, like in this press release with the comic above.

Anyhow, expect the trial version on Friday and let us know how it is!

Finally I have been waiting for this since I got my Wii (about a month ago on Nov. 19th). This is going to be one of most used channel on my Wii.

Perfect timing… I finally scored a Wii yesterday!
Also worth mentioning: the Wii Weather Channel went live today as well. The News Channel is expected to go live towards the end of January.

I’m surprised and a bit annoyed that they’re actually charging for this. Not that I have a Wii, although I never know what lies under that Christmas tree. I guess it isn’t much (correct me if 500 Wii pts isn’t $5) but it seems wrong in principal. If I do get a Wii I’ll probably cheap out on them and just use the latest testing version.

I can understand paying for the trouble it is for them to work with software companies and compatibility problems of making classic games available, but not for the web browser.

BTW:Looks like you’re making us add greater numbers now, this one adds to 14. Next thing you know you’ll be making us multiply. I may need to find my calculator (just kidding) ;)

I was kinda surprised that they were charging for this, too.I guess that is what we get for the desktop version of Opera being free so they have to make their money somewhere else.
