Pixelotto: From The Creator Of The Million Dollar Homepage
The creator of the Million Dollar Homepage is at it again with a whole new venture. Previously Alex Tew sold 1 pixel for $1 and in the end he sold all 1 million pixels on his site. In fact, the last 1,000 pixels were sold on eBay for a cost of $38,000! Why would people buy so many of these tiny ad spots? I’m not sure but this animated GIF image shows the progression of the Million Dollar Homepage over time and I am still astonished.
The newest idea from Alex Tew is called Pixelotto and will be opening the doors on December 5th. I was looking through some of the comments on TechCrunch’s article and there was a lot of good information including a link to the screenshot that I have on the right. Yep, your eyes aren’t lying to you…he is already selling ad space before he makes the site publicly available. Why is this site going to be any different? Because each of the 1 million pixels will cost $2 and eventually $1 million will be given out to someone via a lottery drawing that involves the people who have clicked on the ads. Here is some more information that I managed to scrounge up reading through the comments from TechCrunch:
- Every REGISTERED user gets 10 chances per day to enter the lottery. The more entries you make the more you get the chance to win the lottery when the draw takes place. So bots won’t work.
Here is the email that is being sent out to sell the ad space before December 5:
Hi
I have some very exciting news I’d like to share with you.
Next week, on 5th December, I am launching a new venture called ‘Pixelotto’. It’s similar to The Million Dollar Homepage only this time I will be giving away $1,000,000!
It’s all based around pixel advertising and generating big traffic for advertisers. Visitors play for free - all they have to do is click on the ads for chances to win the jackpot. The more they click, the more chances they have - and the more traffic you receive.
As a valued customer of The Million Dollar Homepage, I’d like to give you an exclusive opportunity to purchase advertising space on Pixelotto before the site goes public. The world will be watching next week and this is your chance to get on-board before everyone else.
The following link will give you exclusive access to Pixelotto, where you can buy ad space right now:
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
If you have any questions don’t hesitate to e-mail me and my team at info@pixelotto.com
I look forward to welcoming you on-board for this new pixel adventure!
Cheers,
Alex Tew

Isn’t this insane! The creativity of Alex Tew is amazing and there are many people saying that he won’t succeed in doing this. Honestly, I hope he does because so many people try to copy off of his marketing ideas that I think he deserves to be successful. Not only that but he has found a way to make people want to click on the ads…and who wouldn’t want to be a millionaire? What a genius!

Hey, I don’t belive this! I’ve just set up two sites, both working around this concept!
The first one is http://www.cashcells.co.uk : This site offers the user clicking on the adverts the chance to win $$$, the total size of the prize is directly related to the number of adverts.
The second site is http://www.microlotto.co.uk : This site gives the advertiser who buys a square the chance to win in a sort of ‘cell lottery’ set up. Check em out!
I was never a fan of the Million Dollar Homepage, but this is a great idea. I think the only problem is, I don’t think he realises that his click through rates aren’t worth much at all. Who’s going to want someone just to visit their site and close it? All that does is waste bandwidth. It’s been proven that clicking incentives don’t work.
I think that if he could get the Million Dollar Homepage to work that he could get this “clone” to as well, since there is the extra incentive that people will be pushed to the site. I’m sure a majority of people will close the window immediately just like you said, but I’m sure something will still attract advertisers.
Anyone who thinks this won’t be successful, look at all the buzz it’s created on TechCrunch. Almost 100 comments in less then a day? Plus the fact that he has an existing client list from his last project, what makes you think they won’t pay a few more bucks to get some more publicity. It would be interesting if he gave out a prize to the “winning†link too, to drive more advertisers to buy space, but I guess they inherently make money with more user clicks.
If anyone is interested in pixel advertising and art in general, you should check out http://www.citypixel.com . It’s quite an amazing site and they definitely put a spin on internet pixel ads.
Anyway, I wish Mr. Tew all the luck in the world, and trust me I will be one of many clicking away hoping to win the million bucks!
Insane? Yes. Creative? Maybe. Overall I’m unimpressed by all this. Alex has brought garbage gullibility marketing to the internet. Big deal. Advertisers are getting low value at high price. I wouldn’t be too proud of that.
Interesting Idea, but those clicks would simple inflate the advertisers Bandwidth and nothing more than than..
Good for Tew, its just money, money, money…

I have to say, I like this idea. It seems very creative, and it will at least draw many users to the site. The concerns seem legitimate, though, so Tew might need to put some sort of spin on it, but I think, in the end, everyone will benefit. After all, if lots of people go to the site, a customer still might be attracted to a product right before they close a window.
Maybe he could make it so that only ten of your clicks will count a day.
Regardless, congratulations Mr. Tew!
I have to admit that you are one clever sucker. You bought the domain that people are going to arrive at after they misspell the real site’s name. Bet you’ll be getting a surge in traffic soon after the real Pixelotto’s door’s open.
Yeah, the clickthroughs won’t be worth that much if people are just clicking to try to win.
Alright here’s a site that’s NOT the same as milliondollarhomepage. Cheaper too

I’m personally tired of all this pixel ads, and other pages which pretend that they are useful.
I have something better. http://www.purewasteoftime.com.
My name is Michael Blakeley, in three days time I was going to launch http://www.tickettoamillion.com but I have to bring this forward to today. It is the same idea as Alex Stews and I registered the domain name on the 16th August but he has miraculously come up with idea and launched three days before me.
Mine is the same idea but only a one off and a million dollars goes to one lucky entrant. Anyway please come and join my website is had taken me 4 months of hard work and asking favours to get it this far and It deserves to succeed. Check it out just to see how similar they are!!

Hi,
I just wanted to get in touch to mention our newly launched website, TurfJam. Its an experiment in the worth of online advertising spaces.
Following on from Internet legends such as the Million Dollar Homepage, TurfJam is an advertising opportunity for marketeers and businesses.. however, the difference here is that each spot on TurfJam is being auctioned off. There are 100 pieces of “turfâ€, being released 10 at a time. As each auction runs and completes we will be updating and comparing the winning cost of each piece (all are the same size) to see how the price changes over time, and in relation to the number of pieces of turf left.
If you would like more information please visit http://www.turfjam.com or get in touch with any questions.

Craig Williams
