Mozilla has put the Firefox 2 RC1 files up on their FTP and their download page says that they will have all of the links up by 3PM PDT. However, with the last release of Firefox I put together the nice drop-down menu downloader and it uses the exact same links that they will be providing on that page (which means these links share the load between servers instead of linking directly to one FTP location).

Just select your language from the drop-down menu and then press the operating system button for the OS that you would like:

If you have been unaware of RC1 there have been some great visual changes going on since Firefox 2 Beta 2 was released. The navigation buttons have gotten yet another facelift and the tabs actually seem to fit in now.

There is also a portable version of the RC1 to make it a little easier to try. All you have to do is download the Firefox Portable file. Then you unzip the file and browse for the file FirefoxPortable.exe. Just execute that file and you will be running Firefox 2 RC1! The profile is kept with the FirefoxPortable folder so you don’t have to worry about messing up your other profile and the uninstallation process is simple…just delete the folder!

This appears to be the same version that you wrote about a couple of weeks ago. The version is the same (20060918) and I don’t see any differences.

It is the same version that I wrote about a week ago which means they did not find anything that needed to be changed. If you are still running that version then there is no need to upgrade.

I am going to try the portable version and see how that goes. If all goes well, then I will go ahead and switch from 1.5x.

I am now running Vista and am loving it. I also am running the beta version of Office and am liking it as well. However, I have not spent much time with it yet.
I am liking the new interface, although I am slower as I am having to find some stuff due to the changes.

It is not clear to me, does THIS version has the “major updates” feature, or not?

If it is the same as 20060918 (preRC1), then NO, but if it is 20060921, then YES.

    Thanks !

The Firefox.exe file is the same as one from 2.0 RC1 candidate (released 2006-09-19), but the whole distribution is 5 KB larger. So, this is NOT absolutely the same distribution.

  7. Avatar

OK, the distribution file is 5 KB larger, but it’s contents is absolutely (1 to 1) the same as 2.0-preRC1 released 2006-09-19.

So, it is different because of worse compression? :)
The answer to my question about “major updates” feature is: NO, this release doesn’t contain that feature.
That means, this distribution will NOT become the final version. RC2 will be released.

They still have plans to release a RC2 and an RC3.

Thanks for the portable version Ryan.

I am using it on my SanDisk Cruzer 2GB flash drive at work. So far, no problems at all. I will move to this version (non portable) soon for my desktop at home.

 :|  8O :) :? 8) :D   :P  ;) :o  :x :( :!: :?:
