Is Google getting ready to compete with photo services like Flickr? They just might be because Philipp Lenssen noticed a link on the Picasa Homepage that points to a “New! Picasa Web Albums“. Unfortunately the page that the link points to doesn’t currently exist, but hopefully this is a hint.
I am looking forward to seeing what Google does special to make these albums so unique. Will they allow people to skin their pages so that everyone can have a customized look? They have so many services that they could integrate with a photo service, such as the Google Page Creator so that people can create their own sites and add their photo albums. Oh the possibilities!

I want a Picasa API! I need to be able to rename on import and have multi-tiered directories!
In other news, yay for Picasa web albums!
I am actually surprised that Google hasn’t released an API for Picasa. Maybe the web albums will push Google to make the API so that everyone can enjoy the fruits of their labor

Now that Picasa web albums has been out for a while I think it’s safe to say that it doesn’t come close to matching Flickr in any way. Picasa web albums seem bland and don’t bring anything new to online photo sharing.
